Gravitational Softening in Simulations with Adaptive Mass Resolution

چکیده
Pairwise forces between particles in cosmological N-body simulations are generally softened to avoid hard collisions. Physically, this softening corresponds to treating the particles as diffuse clouds rather than point masses. For particles of unequal mass (and hence unequal softening length), computing the softened force involves a nontrivial double integral over the volumes of the two particles. We show that Plummer force softening is consistent with this interpretation of softening while spline softening is not. We provide closed-form expressions and numerical implementation for pairwise gravitational force laws for pairs of particles of general softening scales ε1 and ε2 assuming the commonly used cloud profiles: NGP, CIC, TSC, and PQS. Similarly, we generalize Plummer force law into pairs of particles of general softenings. We relate our expressions to the gaussian, Plummer and spline force softenings known from literature. Our expressions allow inclusions of pointlike particles such as stars or supermassive black holes.

متن کاملAn energy-conserving formalism for adaptive gravitational force softening in SPH and N−body codes
In this paper we describe an adaptive softening length formalism for collisionless N−body and self-gravitating Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) calculations which conserves momentum and energy exactly. This means that spatially variable softening lengths can be used in N−body calculations without secular increases in energy. The formalism requires the calculation of a small additional term...
متن کاملAngular momentum transport and disk morphology in SPH simulations of galaxy formation
We perform controlled N-Body/SPH simulations of disk galaxy formation by cooling a rotating gaseous mass distribution inside equilibrium cuspy spherical and triaxial dark matter halos. We systematically study the angular momentum transport and the disk morphology as we increase the number of dark matter and gas particles from 10 to 10, and decrease the gravitational softening from 2 kpc to 50 p...
متن کاملNumerical simulations of the type III migration: I. Disc model and convergence tests
We investigate the fast (type III) migration regime of high-mass protoplanets orbiting in protoplanetary disks. This type of migration is dominated by corotational torques. We study the the details of flow structure in the planet’s vicinity, the dependence of migration rate on the adopted disc model, and the numerical convergence of models (independence of certain numerical parameters such as g...
متن کاملGravitational softening as a smoothing operation
In self-consistent N -body simulations of collisionless systems, gravitational interactions are modified on small scales to remove singularities and simplify the task of numerically integrating the equations of motion. This ‘gravitational softening’ is sometimes presented as an ad-hoc departure from Newtonian gravity. However, softening can also be described as a smoothing operation applied to ...
